Luke Morris: The ground could be a big positive

2.05pm Newmarket

Assanilka

We clearly didn’t see the best of her on her return at Kempton, but she ran well  in Group 3 company in France last season and certainly looked as though this trip would suit when she stayed on well to win her maiden over 1m at Kempton last October. The soft ground is obviously an unknown though, and she does need to step up form-wise to be winning this, but she has only run three times, so the potential is there.

Holmeswood

He is lightly-raced and has progressive form, and I think he has a decent chance. He hasn’t raced on anything this soft, but I am told connections are very happy to have seen the rain, so the ground could be a big positive. And he is by Mayson, after all, and his dam handled soft as well. He probably wasn’t best positioned throughout when he was third at Doncaster on his return, so I think he can improve on that, and the first-time cheekpieces will hopefully help, too.

Cherubic

She looked very green on her debut here at the Craven meeting and Charlie’s 2yos tend to improve a fair amount for the run.  She has an extra furlong and much softer ground to contend with here, but Charlie has his juveniles in good form and had an impressive winner here on Thursday night.

Professor

He ran really well for me on his comeback after a long break when fifth at Kempton in January, though he hasn’t really gone on from there. However, his recent third at Windsor wasn’t a bad effort at all, and I think he has been crying out for some juice in the ground, and he has slipped down to a sensible mark. I think he could go well at a price.

God Given

I believe she has been working well and the step up to 1m4f will suit her, too, on pedigree. She ran well against some high-class fillies in Shutter Speed and Sobetsu in her two starts in 1m maidens last season – it was soft when she raced against Shutter Speed at Yarmouth – and this Nathaniel half-sister to Postponed can hopefully go well here and continue to progress throughout the season.
