Like all blackjack games, European Blackjack involves both the player and dealer trying to reach a score of 21 using two or more cards. The one to score the highest without going "bust" (exceeding 21) wins. In the event that both the dealer and the player have equal hands then the game is a "push" (a tie and the bet amount returned). The ultimate hand in European Blackjack is "blackjack" - a two card combination of an ace and a ten-value card (e.g. 10, Jack, Queen and King). European Blackjack is played against the dealer and not against other players.
The player acts first but can see one of the dealer's cards. Armed with this information and that of the value of the player's hand, the player must decide to "stay" or "hit". Staying means the player accepts their current score and believes the dealer does not have a greater hand or cannot build a greater hand by hitting more cards.

Some European Blackjack features include splitting, insurance and double down. Players can double down when they are certain their next card will beat the dealer - players will not be permitted to draw another after the "double" card. In European Blackjack players can only double down when their initial two cards are worth a combined 9, 10 or 11.
Insurance is an extra bet taken by the player when the dealer is dealt an Ace. The player will then be rewarded if the dealer has blackjack.
When a player receives two cards of the same value, i.e. a 10 of hearts and 10 of spades, the player will be allowed to split these cards and play them both against the dealer's hand.
