Ten Players Share Bad Beat Jackpot
Christmas came a day late for ten poker players who won inaugural Bad Beat Jackpot on Boxing Day 2005.
The Bad Beat Jackpot was launched at 32Red Poker in November 2005 with $50,000 in the pot, and Jackpot grew to a whopping $92,814 by December 26th when it was eventually won.
At a $1/$2 Bad Beat tables, DoctorHowser held pocket nines versus Eldkvarn's 10c8c. A flop of 7c, 9c, 6c turned the weaker starting hand into the nut straight flush, at the same time giving DoctorHowser the third 9. Eldkvarn flat-called the $8 bet, and the turn showed the 8s, prompting the all-in push for $13.50 and a call from Eldkvarn. But the river turned this bad read into a bad beat. Out came the 9d, giving DoctorHowser four nines, and though still not improving his hand to bear Eldkvarn, it did give him a good enough hand to take home the $32,484.91 Bad Beat Jackpot. Eldkvarn walked away with a bigger bank roll as well, winning $16,242.45 for standing up to such a formidable hand.
The ten players at the table divvied up the prize pool as follows:
- DoctorHowser $32,484.91
- Eldkvarn $16,242.45
- GreatRomelus $2,030.31
- NHB $2,030.31

Troubled Pro Wins Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas
2nd December 2005, Gibraltar: After hours of tension, back-biting, a fight and fantastic poker at the final table, the $2 million Tournament of Champions Freeroll finally came to a close with troubled professional poker player Mike Matusow coming out on top.
The 3-day tournament had a field of 114 players, and got off to a controversial start when 3 of poker's biggest names - Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth - were invited without having gone through the qualification process. The other invitees came from the final table of this year's WSOP Championship event, plus the top 20 finishers in each of the five WSOP Circuit championships. Many of the players - pros and amateurs alike - who had earned their seats were unhappy with the addition of 3 of the best poker players in the world.
Only Hellmuth, however, made it through to the final table on day 3. Hellmuth, who finished second in this event in 2004, was determined to go one better, and as always was not shy in making his feelings known to his fellow players.
Joining Phil at the final table was Steve Dannenmann, second in this year's WSOP main event; Grant Lang, who busted out 5th after taking a commanding chip lead into the final table at his last tournament; David Levi, the long-time pro; Hoyt Corkins, who has been experiencing much tournament success recently; Keith Sexton, yet to win a major tournament; Brandon Adams, an amateur player from New Orleans who lost the majority of his possessions during Hurricane Katrina; Tony Bloom, one of the UK's most successful pros; and Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow, coming back from a year of many disappointments.
The 2005 TOC final table must be one of the most dramatic of all time. The insults were traded from the start, mostly aimed at Hellmuth. The jovial nature of the banter between Dannenmann and Hellmuth turned sour half way through. Phil's constant playing with his chips and stacking them in a way which made it difficult for his opponents to count them annoyed Steve enough for him to insist that it stopped. Hellmuth refused, and the situation descending into an argument which ended in the usually soft-spoken Dannenmann shouting at Hellmuth, to the shock of the watching crowd, "You aren't a professional - you're a punk!"
After several hours of the chips passing back and forth, and several surprising big hands, the final 3 was made up of Hellmuth, Corkins and Matusow - the 3 players who had dominated the tournament from day one. At this point, most of the chatter was between two of the biggest mouths in poker - Hellmuth and Matusow - leaving Corkins in peace.
The first hand in three-handed play when Corkins lost $150,000 to Matusow after raising Matusow all-in before the flop with 5-4 suited. Matusow called with A-6, and the high card held up. Corkins managed to regain the chip lead, however, with a series of small pot wins. But then Corkin lucked out again. He moved all in with A-4 suited, and was called by Matusow, holding pocket 5s - and gave Matusow the biggest pot win of the night so far.
But Corkins once again battled back, and regained the chip lead an hour later. Yet once again the cards were not with Hoyt. After calling Matusow's all-in re-raise, Corkin's A-K looked good against Mike's A-Q, and The Mouth looked to be going home in third. But a Queen on the river not only saved Mike, but gave him a commanding chip lead that would not be overcome.
Hellmuth got the crowd's support behind him after promising to buy them 30 bottles of Dom Perignon champagne (at $150 a bottle) if he were to win the tournament. But the crowd's cheers couldn't prevent Phil from crashing out in third place, much to his disappointment. After being faced with Corkin's constant raising of his blinds, Hellmuth jumped at the chance to get his own back when he was dealt A-Q. Unfortunately for Phil, he was horrified to see Corkins turn over the Bullets, and Hellmuth was left with a little over $100,000. He never recovered, and finished third, winning $250,000.
Heads-up play began with a 3-1 chip advantage to Matusow, but Corkins proved very adept at reading Mike's play, and battled back to virtually level half an hour later. But the final hand soon came when Corkins moved all-in on a semi-bluff. Holding Q-10 after a flop of K-J-4, Corkins followed Matusow's large raise with an all-in re-raise. Matusow called with K-9, but Corkins couldn't fill his straight and had to settle with second place and a cheque for $325,000.
After a year of much turmoil, which began with a spell in jail, Matusow was overjoyed about his first place, and $1 million cheque, saying, "This is the greatest moment of my life. All the disappointments I've had. All the bad beats. All the bad decisions. This win means everything to me."
