Can Postecoglou turn things around at Tottenham?

Can Postecoglou turn things around at Tottenham?

With his club currently languishing in 15th place in the Premier League, is Ange Postecoglou on his way out at Spurs? Or can the Australian stop the rot at Tottenham?

It’s now just one league win in ten for the north London club, whose most recent defeat came away to Everton.

Have fans had enough of Big Ange?

The Toffees may have benefited from an old manager bounce, David Moyes’ returning to Goodison to inspire his side to score three goals before half-time on Sunday. In the six league games before that, Everton had scored once.

This isn’t about the Toffees, though. Although Tottenham showed some semblance of fight to score two second half goals against Everton, the north London side nevertheless slumped to another loss.

And the fans who loved Big Ange when he arrived last season may have had enough of the Australian’s inflexible tactical approach.

When the 59-year-old arrived at Spurs in the summer of 2023, his side started the new season in sensational style, winning eight of his first 10 games in charge – drawing the remaining two.

During that run, Spurs would beat Man Utd 2-0, turn over Liverpool 2-1, and take a point from Arsenal at the Emirates.

It was an electrifying start that had Tottenham fans dreaming big, with a positive, attractive style of play and fantastic results. Even if a drop-off was inevitable, the side still finished fifth in the league last season, ahead of the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Man Utd.

Spurs have two wins in their last seven league games

Yet Postecoglou’s first season nevertheless ended in worrying fashion in terms of results. Spurs’ last seven league games yielded just two wins, and five defeats.

In the current campaign, Tottenham have lost 12 league games to date. While injuries have seen many of his players sidelined, it’s also difficult to look past Postecoglou’s insistence on an attack-focused style of play that leaves his defence horribly exposed when things go wrong.

At home against Liverpool back in December, Tottenham shipped six goals. Even struggling Ipswich beat the North London side on their home turf, winning 2-1 in November.

With wins few and far between, perhaps it’s not a surprise that Postecoglou’s manner has become more prickly in recent months, too, chiding a reporter with the words “great way to start an interview” after the journalist had the temerity to suggest that losing football matches was now a familiar story for Ange.

One man’s unconscionable slight is another man’s banal statement of fact, it seems. Regardless, it’s thought that despite Spurs’ disappointing recent performances, the manager is likely to keep his job in the short term.

Trip to Hoffenheim to give fans something to cheer?

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may decide to stick with Postecoglou until the end of the season – if the coach can start inspiring wins once again. Even if the side are struggling badly in the Premier League, they still look a good thing to progress in the Europa League.

Indeed, Postecoglou has said that he “always” wins a trophy in his second season. At this point, supporters might settle for winning a game.

Spurs are away to Hoffenheim on Thursday night, with the visitors 23/20 to take the away win.

After drawing to Rangers last time out in this competition, can Tottenham take victory against the Bundesliga side – and give supporters something to cheer after a pretty bleak few weeks?
