Carabao Cup betting: Newcastle eyeing first trophy under Eddie Howe?

Carabao Cup betting: Newcastle eyeing first trophy under Eddie Howe?

With the third round of the Carabao Cup getting underway this week, could Newcastle be capable of winning the title for the first time in their history?

The Magpies’ fortunes have changed significantly since the Saudi Arabian buyout in October 2021; following years of mediocrity under former owner Mike Ashley, the side are currently third in the Premier League.

Carabao Cup betting – Newcastle looking strong

It would be remiss not to mention that many view the Saudi consortium’s purchase of Newcastle United as an egregious example of ‘sportswashing’.

Saudi Arabia has a long history of human rights abuses; by lavishing money on a high-profile football club, the oil-rich Middle Eastern nation can theoretically improve its global image, despite continuing to oppress its citizens.

Ethics aside, new ownership has certainly revitalised the side. Newcastle are 12/1 shots to win the Carabao Cup this season. Without a domestic Cup victory since 1955, when the side won the FA Cup, could the Mags be a good bet to go all the way here?

Newcastle coach Eddie Howe was bullish ahead of Newcastle’s Cup tie against Crystal Palace on Wednesday. Speaking during a press conference, Howe said: “We want to do well in the cups. I said at the very beginning that my dream was to try to win something for Newcastle and that hasn’t changed.”

Hardly a revelation that a manager wants to win trophies, of course. But Newcastle have lost one game all season (against Liverpool), and the side have won six of their last seven Premier League games.

Miguel Almiron has seven goals in seven matches

At the weekend they swept Southampton aside at St Mary’s, winning 4-1. It’s the second time in as many games they’ve scored four goals, having gubbed Aston Villa 4-0 a week earlier.

Miguel Almiron has scored seven goals in his last seven appearances for the Mags, and Newcastle go into the match at St James’s Park on Wednesday with spirits high. Find all the Carabao Cup match betting odds here

Man City remain favourites to win the competition, at 3/1; Pep Guardiola’s side have won the League Cup six times since 2014. City won four times on the bounce before last year, when Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to take the trophy.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are 7/1 second favourites to win the Carabao Cup in this campaign, with Spurs 9/1 shots, Chelsea 11/1 and Arsenal rated 12/1 to lift the trophy.

For Newcastle and Eddie Howe though, perhaps Cup glory here could just be the start…
