Frank Warren exclusive on Anthony Cacace vs Leigh Wood
Frank Warren can’t wait for the first bell to sound and for Anthony Cacace and Leigh Wood to get down to business this weekend. For all the latest fight odds, visit our sportsbook.
Queensberry’s new broadcast deal with DAZN continues with what appears to be a surefire super featherweight crowd pleaser.
“It’s a cracking fight”
Former IBF 130lb champion, Cacace (23-1, 8 KOs), and two-time WBA featherweight title holder, Wood (28-3, 17 KOs) both have exciting, risk taking styles and carry the type of thudding, sickening power that can end a fight in a split second.
The similarities don’t end there.
Both found success at the top level after passing the age of 30 and are hungry to capitalise and cram as much as they can into the remaining years of their career.
“It’s a cracking fight and I’m sure everybody will agree with that,” Warren told 32Red. “Cacace who is in his thirties has suddenly found out that if he knuckles down and does what he does, he can show the brilliant talent that he’s got. He’s done that and gone on and won a world title.
“He’s beaten two two-time world champions back to back and now he’s fighting another one on Saturday.
“As for Leigh, this is a fight that he can’t afford to lose if he wants to re-establish himself and get a shot at one of the bone-fide world titles at super featherweight.”
“There’s serious jeopardy for both guys”
Wood has been out of the ring since he pulled a right hook out of the fire and brought a dramatic end to his WBA title defence against Josh Warrington in October 2023.
Whilst Wood has been out of the ring, Cacace has ascended into world class. He snatched the IBF super featherweight title away from Joe Cordina with a brutal eighth round finish and then he too beat Warrington, boxing his way to a twelve round decision at Wembley Stadium last September.
Now, they will meet. Both fighters are 36 years old and will know that a conclusive defeat will be hard to rebound from at the stage of their careers. The fight looks like being the ideal antidote to the disappointing, passionless performance some of boxing’s most well known fighters produced last weekend.
“There’s serious jeopardy there for both guys,” Warren said.
“There will be a big crowd and a great atmosphere in the Motorpoint Arena and Cacace’s going into the other guy’s backyard. It’s going to be a great night with a fabulous undercard.
“I’m really looking forward to it.”
