Premier League outright markets: 33/1 shots Leicester worth a second look?

Just three games into the new season, kneejerk reactions to early successes might be a mistake. But that’s never held us back before, so let’s take another look at the outright betting market for the Premier League. Find all the latest outright betting here

Pre-season, the odds compilers were adamant that a new season meant a new City; despite the litany of errors from the previous campaign, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were nonetheless viewed as clear favourites for the title. Just as they had been at the start of the previous season, in fact.

Life really does come at you fast these days, though. After City’s 5-2 loss at the Etihad to Leicester on Sunday – the first time a Pep Guardiola side has ever conceded five goals in a league game, apparently – the Manchester side are no longer front runners, with the irrepressible Liverpool currently 9/10 to successfully retain the Premier League championship. City are now 8/5 shots.

But while the outstanding Liverpool surely deserve their favourite status, judging by recent performances, could Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester be worth a modest flutter as dark horses to win the Prem again this season?

Back in 2016, the Foxes already pulled off one seemingly once-in-a-lifetime, never-to-be-repeated feat of scarcely credible footballing audacity; might this season’s chaotic, atypical nature give them a second shot at a stunning tilt at the title?

Leicester’s outstanding win on Sunday has seen them climb to the top of the league on goal difference; they are currently available at 33/1 to win the title. So are they realistic contenders to at least put up a challenge?

Well, last season’s fifth place finish was their best since they won the league back in 2016 – but somehow, it still felt like somewhat anticlimactic, after the team had come flying out of the blocks in the first half of the season.

After beating Southampton 9-nil, climbing to third in the league table, and looking very much on course for Champions League qualification, Leicester fell away around Christmas time.

They’ve blown the bloody doors off once again with this new start to the campaign – but can Rodgers keep the momentum going ‘til the bitter end this time? It’s a big ask – but what’s life without a little optimism.

If you take a less romantic view when it comes to placing an outright bet, fair enough – perhaps backing the Foxes for a top four finish makes more appeal. Leicester are 3/1 to finish in the top four – and evens to land a top six finish.

Jamie Vardy is currently 5/1 second favourite to finish the season as the league’s top scorer, as he did last season – not bad for a striker who will be 34 next January. And if you’re convinced the Leicester forward is going to have a campaign to remember, you can even back him at 20/1 to win the PFA Player of the Year awards.

Of course, even if Leicester end up running out of gas and just wind up being amongst the best of the rest, there’s a way to make that pay too; back them to win in our “winner without the big six market” – Leicester are currently 7/5 favs, with Everton 7/4 shots, Wolves 5/1, and Leeds lurking at 11/1
