Premier League preview: Brighton vs Crystal Palace, Southampton vs Brentford

Brighton vs Crystal Palace

On the face of it, the fact that Crystal Palace are 12th in the Prem sounds reasonably positive. Midtable respectability, right?

Well, except that Palace are just five points clear of 20th placed Southampton in the table. That, and the fact that Eagles are still yet to win a game in 2023.

Palace arrive at the Amex on the back of two defeats, having drawn their last three before that. And in ten league games this year, Patrick Vieira’s side have scored a total of four goals. It’s not great, is it.

Perhaps the prospect of taking on their loathed rivals Brighton can spark some kind of fire in the visitors; but on the face of it, it doesn’t look good for Pat’s side.

True, the Seagulls had to settle for a draw against Leeds this weekend, but they’ve lost just one league game this year, in contrast to the opposition here.

In their last home game they blew West Ham away 4-0, having turned over Liverpool 3-0 a few months earlier. They’ve generally been scoring plenty of goals too, and it’s tough to see Palace taking anything from this match.

The visitors have at least kept it tight recently; eight of their last nine Prem games have seen two or fewer goals scored. So it could make sense to back Brighton to win and under 2.5 goals in a double at 2/1. Alternatively, given Palace’s inability to find the net, you could back Brighton to win and BTTS No at 9/10

Southampton vs Brentford

The Saints have focused on keeping it tight since Ruben Selles took the reins; they beat Leicester 1-0 in their last home game, and held Man United to a goalless draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Brentford are having a fine season, but they’ve failed to win any of their last three away games. Thomas Frank’s side lost to Everton last time out, too. Southampton will presumably focus on keeping the Bees at bay, and this one could follow a similar pattern to the side’s recent performances – each of their last four league matches have featured one or fewer goals.

Under 2.5 goals is a 4/6 shot. Or, you could push the boat out and chance a Saints 1-0 win in the correct score market at 15/2
