Roulette Glossary

American Wheel/Roulette - This version of roulette from the land of Old Sam has a wheel containing 38 numbers, plus 2 zeroes. This boosts the house edge but it also means wheely big returns for players.

Ball - It’s the belle of the ball in Roulette because where it lands determines the winning number and colour.

Column Bet - This bet will stake your money on all 12 numbers in your chosen column. Successful bets are paid out at 2:1.

Combination Bet - When you choose a range of numbers to bet on in one spin. Think of it as a pick ’n’ mix.

Corner Bet - A bet where you place a wager on 1 of 4 possible numbers. A winning bet will return 8:1. What are the odds of that, ey?

European Wheel - The European version of roulette. Because of the single zero, there are 37 numbers on the wheel. Just make sure you Czech the version before you play!

Even - Odd Bet - A bet on a spin resulting in an odd or even number. With a return of 1:1, even a millionaire would play at those odds.

French Roulette - The French version of roulette. It has a single zero and a range of call bets. Just no frogs legs or garlic thrown in.

Inside Bet - Don’t worry, you can still place this bet from your garden shed. It’s just a wager on the number grid/betting board on the table.

Les Orphanes – The section of numbers between the above tiers. The Orphans include 17, 34 and 6, which leaves The Orphelins as 1, 20, 14, 31 and 9. It’s our favourite (Oliver) twist to the game.

Les Voisins du Zero – numbers between and including 22 and 25. This literally mean Neighbours of Zero amongst a number of things.

Outside Bet - No, this isn’t a bet you make from your patio. It’s any bet that’s not a number i.e. odd, even or colour.

Red-Black Bet - This is a simply a bet on one of two colours. So your choice is pretty black and white, I’d say….

Split Bet - This is a bet on two numbers. That bad news is it involves breaking up (your chips).

Straight Up Bet - Do you like it straight up? No, that’s not a cheesy chat up line. It’s another way of saying a bet on one number. Straight up bets yields the highest possible return in a roulette game, up to 38:1 when playing American Roulette.

Tiers de Cylindre – numbers between, and including, 27 and 33. 9 chips or multiples of 9 are bet. 2 chips are bet on the 0,2,3 trio; 1 on the 4/7 split; 1 on 12/15; 1 on 18/21; 1 on 19/22; 2 on 25/26/28/29 corner; and 1 on 32/35.

Trio Bet - This is a bet on three numbers. It’s as simple as 1-2-3.

Zero, Double Zero - A bet on the result being a zero or double zero. Whether or nought that’s the number you’ll get, it’s hard to say!
