Champions League preview: Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

Champions League preview: Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

Will the recently crowned La Liga champions see off Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu? Or can the Bavarian team dump Real out of the competition in their own backyard on Wednesday night – and join fellow German side Borussia Dortmund in the final?

It ended 2-2 in the first leg of this semi-final, Vinicius Jr scoring a brace for Los Blancos, with Harry Kane and Leroy Sane each netting for Bayern.

Bayern haven’t beaten Real in their last 7 away games

It’s fair to say the German club’s entire season is riding on this second leg. While Harry Kane has had an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga, Bayern continue to suffer domestically; at the weekend, they lost 3-1 to Stuttgart.

With Bayer Leverkusen already crowned champions of the German top flight, Bayern’s only hope of a trophy is the Champions League. So can Thomas Tuchel’s side overcome a Real team who have already seen off one-time favourites Man City in the previous round?

History suggests Bayern are up against it; the German club have failed to win any of their last seven away games against Real.

If that statistic underlines the difficulty in overcoming the Spanish side on their home turf though, the good news is the visitors may not have to – at least in 90 minutes. Bayern may be capable of taking a leaf out of Real’s book, doing to them what Carlo Ancelotti’s side did to Man City in the quarter-finals.

Keep the scores level, hold their nerve in the penalty shootout – and then to Wembley. It’s one potential route to the final – and after all, Real Madrid have drawn their last four Champions League matches.

The draw is a 29/10 shot. But if Real are able to wrap this one up without the rigmarole of a penalty shootout, Vinicius Junior could be the man to score a decisive goal for the hosts.

He scored twice in the first leg, and is 27/20 to find the net again on Wednesday.
