Champions League preview: Milan vs Spurs, Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich

Milan vs Spurs

Milan won 1-0 against Torino on Friday, victory coming courtesy of an Olivier Giroud header. That’s a rare positive result for the Italian side in 2023, though; before that victory, Stefano Pioli’s side had lost four games on the bounce, and were winless in their last seven outings.

Before the new year, Milan’s form was better – but in the Champions League, they still struggled against Premier League opposition, losing to Chelsea 5-0 over the two legs.

Tottenham are a somewhat befuddling side at the moment, overcoming Man City before getting dismantled by Leicester a week later. And the absence of Hugo Lloris will definitely be a concern for the visitors on Tuesday.

Antonio Conte’s record in Europe is famously unremarkable, too. Still, with Milan conceding five against Sassuolo (currently 15th in Serie A) a few weeks back, one assumes that Tottenham will at least enjoy a few scoring opportunities.

Over 2.5 goals is a 19/20 shot and looks a decent prospect; that bet would have paid off in seven of Milan’s last 10 games in all competitions.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich

Paris Saint-Germain may be top of Ligue 1, but they warmed up for this round of 16 encounter with a 3-1 defeat to Monaco on Saturday.

That makes two straight defeats for the French side, who lost to Marseille in the French Cup days earlier.

More positively, Kylian Mbappe has apparently returned to training after a couple of weeks out with injury, and may be fit to play some role against Bayern here.

The Bundesliga side are unbeaten since November, and even if they’re not running away with the domestic title they remain top of the table, a point clear of Union Berlin.

Bayern beat PSG in the Champions League final back in 2020, of course. And Julian Nagelsmann’s side won’t be fazed by a trip to the Parc des Princes; on their last visit here in 2021 they won 1-0.

With the hosts coming into this match in slightly lacklustre fashion, another flutter on Bayern could prove profitable. Back Bayern to win at 13/8.
