Premier League preview: Chelsea vs Spurs

Premier League preview: Chelsea vs Spurs

Chelsea might have suffered an eye-catching loss away to Arsenal a few weeks ago. But playing at Stamford Bridge, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have looked pretty dependable in recent weeks.

The Blues have won five of their last six home games in all competitions; their last game at the Bridge saw the hosts triumph 6-0 over Everton.

Cole Palmer could prove influential

Admittedly, much of the good feeling that result generated may have faded in the wake of that 5-0 defeat to the Gunners a week later.

But the west London side showed improvement in the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa last week. And playing at home against his old club, Pochettino will demand another committed performance on Thursday night.

When the two sides met at the Tottenham stadium in November, Chelsea won 4-1 as Nicolas Jackson racked up a hat-trick. Ange Postecoglou would surely like to atone for that result here, but Spurs aren’t currently in the most intimidating form.

Tottenham lost 4-0 to Newcastle in their last away game, having shipped three goals away to Fulham at Craven Cottage back in March. They were also beaten at the weekend, losing 3-2 at home to Arsenal.

The hosts look a pretty good shout to uphold their excellent record against Spurs, then; the Blues have lost just one of their last 33 home league games against the north London club.

Chelsea are 5/4 to win. And we couldn’t finish a Chelsea preview without recommending that man Cole Palmer to prove influential once again here. He’s scored in each of his last seven league games at the Bridge; in his last four league appearances at home, Palmer has scored 10 goals!

Rather than being daunted by expectations around him, if anything Palmer appears to be relishing the fact that he’s currently one of a small number of Chelsea players who can be relied upon to step up. Palmer is 5/4 to find the net here.
