Jamie Spencer: I really liked what I saw of Confiding at Newbury

Unfortunately, I am banned at the moment, so I have gone away for a few days – I will be back riding and be busy at Goodwood on Friday, all being well – but I have had a look at Tuesday’s card, so here we go.

I thought the last two races were impossible but I liked Afaak most in the opener at 1.50pm.

This is his first start at the trip but I don’t see that being a problem at all, as he finished an excellent second to Addeybb over 1m1f at Newmarket last season. The handicapper only put him up 1lb for his second in the Hunt Cup last time, so I think he remains on a fair mark and he is lightly-raced, too.

Few, if any, novices could have worked out better this season than the race Confiding won at Newbury. And he did it some style, too. Martyn [Meade] will have a good handle on the form required to win this via his July Stakes winner Advertise, and Confiding really was impressive when beating a host of subsequent winners on his debut.

Of course, there are a lot of horses in here with similar profiles, but I really liked what I saw of Confiding at Newbury and he gets my vote in the Vintage Stakes at 2.25pm; I rode Master Brewer in eighth that day, and he is a very good horse.

Others may be in a rush to write off Tip Two Win after his Ascot fourth last time, but I am not one of them. I take him to win the Lennox Stakes at 3pm.

His second to Saxon Warrior in the Guineas, with Masar and Roaring Lion in behind, is the best piece of form coming into this race and he gets the age allowance, too. He will do for me.

I can’t see past Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup at 3.35pm. He won this race last year as a 3yo and has continued the progression this season. I think the step down to 2m after the Gold Cup will see him in an even better light.

I imagine Al Mureib will be favourite as well in the 6f maiden at 4.10pm, but I think he will take all the beating after his good second on his debut at Newmarket.
