Jamie Spencer: I think he has a winning chance

1.40pm Newmarket

Global Excel

He has run a couple of decent races off this mark this season. It could well be that the step up to 7f enables him to find the slight improvement needed to get his head in front, but we will see.

2.45pm Newmarket

Spun Gold

All his best form has been on the all-weather so far, but at least the handicapper dropped him 4lb for his Nottingham run last time, and that gives him a chance. He does have some turf form and the step back down to 7f may be a good move, but there are obvious doubts.

3.20pm Newmarket

Simoon

He won at Kempton for Andrew [Balding] a couple of seasons ago and he ran an excellent first race for Ed after a big lay-off at Epsom last month. Hopefully, he will progress rather than regress from that run, and the step up to 1m2f should certainly suit him on pedigree. In fact, he really should improve for it.

Shraaoh

He lost his way a bit last season, but he has joined Harry [Fry], which will hopefully freshen him up. He is certainly on a fair mark on his placed efforts at Epsom and Haydock last season, and I think this trip is probably okay for him. He is a feasible winner of a handicap in which you can make a case for all of them.

4.25pm Newmarket

Advanced Virgo

There are a few in here that set a decent form standard, and I imagine the Ascot 1-2 of Herculean and Wadilsafa will attract a lot of interest. So my horse will have to be well above-average to even be going close here. This 1m trip is a good starting point for him, but the distaff side of his pedigree suggests he will need further down the line, unless he takes more after his sire.

4.55 Newmarket

Warsaw Road

He was withdrawn at Lingfield on Saturday after the rain came, and ideally he would want it to remain on the quick side of good here. He was a progressive horse last season and I was happy with his comeback run over 7f at Kempton. He was very keen early on there and got into a bit of early scrimmaging, but he finished off his race well and this extra furlong should suit. I’d like to think he has a winning chance.
