Josephine Gordon: He ran an absolute smashing race for me when second in the Wokingham last time

1.45pm Newmarket

Jousi

Normal comments apply to Hugo’s 2yos first time out.  I won’t be giving her a hard time but she definitely shows us ability at home – I have ridden her and, while she may not be the biggest, she is very game and a real trier – and she is very well-bred, being by Dubawi out of a useful, well-related mare. There are some fillies in here who have run well before, like Sizzling, as well as very expensive sorts like Quargent, so this 7f maiden will take a lot of winning.

2.15pm Newmarket

Alouja

She has run three good races this season, and deserves to get her head in front, and hopefully this is a good opportunity on her handicap debut. She couldn’t get to the enterprisingly-ridden winner when second over 7f here last time but conditions should suit and I think a mark of 79 is fair for her. I rode Gymnaste when she was a little disappointing at Ascot but she is better than that.

2.50pm Newmarket

Hajaj

This will be the first time I have sat on him but he has been running well over longer trips, and the step back down to a mile shouldn’t be a problem. Indeed, he won at Ascot over that distance back in May and has run well off this mark on his last two starts.

3.25pm Newmarket

Steady Pace

He ran an absolutely smashing race for me when second in the Wokingham last time. A 3lb rise was what you would expect for such a good run in a big handicap, and he has been rated higher in the past. He has winning form over this longer trip too, so hopefully he can be as effective over 7f. If he is, then he must have a good each-way chance again.

4.00pm Newmarket

Bullington Bandit

This race is full of potentially high-class juveniles and hopefully I am on one of them. He was 80/1 on his debut at Newbury but there was no fluke about the win and I have won since on the third home, so the form looks okay.  It’s a tough race and he needs to improve a fair amount, but the potential is there for my colt and the slight step up in trip will suit him, too.
