That’s good news for the Gunners, who need to steady the ship after giving up a two-goal lead in each of their last two outings, against both Liverpool and West Ham.
Mikel Arteta’s side still hold a four-point lead over Man City. But Pep Guardiola’s team have a habit of chasing down the leaders – just ask Liverpool.
In any case, if Arsenal need a boost, Southampton could provide it. Arsenal are unbeaten in 23 Premier League home games against the Saints, winning 16 of those.
The south coast side are currently on a six game winless run too. It’s so tight at the bottom, perhaps manager Ruben Selles may yet be able to pull off a Houdini-like escape – but it’s going to be tough.
Selles might also urge his side to recall a visit from another north London club. Last month, Saints fought back to draw 3-3 against Tottenham, a result that led to Antonio Conte’s departure. Could a similar shock be possible against an Arsenal side feeling the pressure?
Perhaps, but given the two sides’ respective positions, it’s tough to look past a home victory.
On one hand, Arsenal have won their last four home games, scoring four goals in three of them (they beat Bournemouth 3-2 in the remaining encounter). Six of the Gunners’ last seven league matches have featured at least four goals, too.
True, Southampton have been able to keep the score down on the road, recently. They won 1-0 against Chelsea, lost 1-0 West Ham and Leeds, and it was goalless at Old Trafford.
But Arsenal’s ability to score is not in doubt, their home record is strong – and what’s more, they may be in the mood to deliver a decisive win after recent setbacks. Back over 2.5 goals by Arsenal at 17/20.
