Bryan Cooper: It’s good to be back with Cheltenham around the corner

It’s good to be back in the saddle again with Cheltenham around the corner, and I’ll run you through my rides at Gowran tomorrow.

1.20pm Gowran

This looks a very competitive 2m4f Beginners’ Chase, and Mall Dini could be the one to beat, but General Principle has definite claims.  He looked to have every chance when falling 3 out here over 2m last time and prior to that had proved pretty consistent, including over this longer trip.

1.55pm Gowran

Clarcam

Ballycasey is obviously the one to beat in here but Clarcam isn’t without a chance. He has 7lb to find with Willie’s horse on official ratings but he comes here in good form after a win in heavy ground at Clonmel last time. He may prefer better ground but hopefully he will be okay in the conditions. We also have Mozoltov in here and you can definitely give him a shout too at his best; I rode him when he finished a fair third in the Tied Cottage last season, he stays this trip, and Mouse is trying him in cheekpieces for the first time.

3.05pm Gowran

Tombstone

We will probably all be chasing Jezki’s tail in here but Tombstone is a good horse in his own right – he finished fourth in the Supreme last season – and he was less than three lengths behind Jessica’s horse when giving him 6lb at Navan last time. Jezki clearly wasn’t at his Grade 1 best there but if he underperforms then hopefully we will be the beneficiary. Rashaan has plenty to do under his big penalty for his Grade 2 win over Apple’s Jade and Petit Mouchoir, but he could be improving fast.

3.40pm Gowran

Leomar

This is obviously a big-field and competitive maiden but Leomar has fair claims. He was a middle-distance winner on the Flat and he has run two solid races over this trip and Limerick and Naas so far. This race is full of unexposed horses but hopefully he is good enough to get into the shake-up, though he probably has to improve to win it. He clearly can do, though, after just two starts over hurdles.
