Bryan Cooper: This looks a tough task for him

I’m at Ascot but in the big race at Haydock I would have to side with Cue Card in the Betfair Chase.

He is by far the best horse in the race and he should be a step ahead of the others if that Wetherby fall hasn’t knocked his confidence, and those mistakes haven’t done so in the past.

He has won this race three times, will love the conditions, and he is the undoubted class horse, even if getting on in age now.

To be honest with you, this looks a tough task for him on recent evidence. He would definitely have place claims here if returning to the form of his impressive and easy win at Punchestown last season, after which the handicapper raised him to a mark of 157. That kind of run would make him competitive here but he picks up a 4lb penalty for that handicap win and the Punchestown form hasn’t really stood up since. And he didn’t fire for me at all when pulled up at Chepstow on his reappearance. Obviously, we are talking a Grade 1 winner here, and a very smart horse, but he does seem up against it at these weights, though I clearly hope I am wrong.
