Jamie Spencer: South Seas ran a real eye-catcher at Sandown last time

I am back riding at Newmarket on Friday evening, but I have had a look at the Goodwood card in the afternoon.

It’s a good renewal of the Glorious Stakes, with horses that have run well and won in a higher grade, and I take Mirage Dancer to lead them home in the 1.50pm.

He won well over course-and-distance earlier in the season, and ran another solid race when a narrow second in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket last time.

I think the Britannia winner Ostilio can take the step up in class in his stride in the 2.25pm. He certainly needs to improve to beat the likes of a peak-form Threeandfourpence and Threading, but Ostilio is a horse on the up and has conditions to suit.

South Seas ran a real eye-catcher at Sandown last time, and it wouldn’t surprise me if connections have had the valuable Unibet Golden Mile (3pm) in mind for him in a while. His last win came in the Solario at two, but he could be ready to strike again after that troubled run last time.

I can’t see past Battaash in the King George at 3.35pm, even with his 3lb penalty for his Temple Stakes win at Haydock earlier in the season, but I found the nursery a complete head-scratcher, so I am happy to give that a miss.

Pretty Baby could get back on the winning trail in the Oak Tree Stakes at 4.40pm after just losing out in a photo at York last time – the step up to 7f should suit her – and Baritone looks a likely one in the 1m3f handicap at 5.15pm.

He probably met two very well-handicapped horses when third at Ascot last time, and the step up in trip will suit. He has an attractive profile, and is bred to be a fair bit better than his current mark.
