Jamie Spencer: There is more improvement in her, and she has conditions to suit

2.05pm Newmarket

Alwaysandforever

She probably has a bit to find with some of these, but she has already shown a level of form that would see her be competitive and this is just her seventh start. She was only just collared the line at Pontefract two starts ago, and probably ran to a similar level of form when fourth here last time in a first-time visor. She needs to improve a fair bit to win, but she has each-way chances, and the cheekpieces are tried here.

Porcelain Girl

I got on board her for the first time at Doncaster, and she quickened up well from off the pace to win there. She has gone up 7lb and this is a lot deeper race, but she did it nicely at Doncaster and she is quite a well-related filly. There is more improvement in her, and she has conditions to suit.

Twist ‘N’ Shake

Luca hasn’t run many juveniles so far this season – this is just the third, I think – but this filly has a lot to recommend her on pedigree. She fetched 180,000gns as a yearling and that isn’t surprising considering she is by Kingman out of a mare who won in Listed company for the stable over 1m2f. I haven’t ridden her at home but presumably she goes well enough to be making her debut here.

Highlight Reel

I rode him when he won over course and distance last August, but things just haven’t clicked for him this season yet. He isn’t straightforward, hence the hood, but he ran well off this mark at Ascot in May and he put a modest run behind him when third at Chelmsford last time. He definitely has the ability to be winning off this mark, and a strongly-run race will allow him to show his best. He does need some kidding, though.

5.35pm Newmarket

Balgair

This is the first time I have ridden him and he is another one who is apparently a bit tricky. But he has improved for the fitting of a hood and he goes for a hat-trick after wins at Bath and here. He has only gone up 7lb for those two successes, and won a similar-grade handicap on fast ground here last time, so he has an obvious chance, I guess, especially as the race has cut up.
