Zelfa Barrett – Fights to Watch

With the world at a standstill because of the Corona Virus pandemic, Zelfa Barrett is doing everything he can to make sure that he hits the ground running when boxing can get back underway.

When the outbreak is over, the Commonwealth Super Featherweight champion can start working towards his goal of becoming the face of boxing in Manchester and following in the footsteps of fighters like Ricky Hatton and Anthony Crolla. Those plans will have to wait. For now the 26 year old is working away in the gym and making sure that he is ready to capitalise when the opportunity arises.

‘The Brown Flash’ is also an avid fight fan and has put together a list of fights for you to watch. The list includes fights which matter to him, ones which influenced him and those that he just enjoys watching.

Floyd Mayweather v Diego Corrales
WBC Super Featherweight title, January 2001

“This is an absolute masterclass of what Floyd was capable of. I think this is one for hardcore boxing fans, some people might not be able to understand just how hard it is to do what Floyd did that night. He literally takes Diego Corrales apart.

“People should also know that at the time, Corrales was in his prime. He had been knocking everybody else out and he’d wanted to fight Floyd for absolutely ages. Floyd was clever and said, ‘Yeah, I’ll fight you but it’s gotta be at super featherweight.’ He knew Corrales was struggling to make the weight so he took it and gave him a beatdown.

“Floyd was dangerous in those days. This was ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ and he would take you out. That’s the version of Floyd that I like.”

Marvelous Marvin Hagler v Sugar Ray Leonard
WBC Middleweight title, April 1987

“Sugar Ray is my man. This is an entertaining fight. Ray Leonard stepped up to the occasion and stepped up in weight by fighting up at middleweight. He’d been out of the ring for ages (Leonard had fought once in five years) and he got knocked down by Kevin Howard at light middleweight in the fight before. A lot of people thought he was finished.

“Bear in mind that Marvin Hagler was a destroyer too. Everybody thought that Leonard was gonna get creamed but he defied all the odds and put in a real shift. It’s also a really good fight.”

Zelfa Barrett v Jordan McCorry
Commonwealth Super Featherweight title, October 2019

“This was my last fight. I defended the Commonwealth title and it was a really entertaining fight. I haven’t really picked it because of how I fought, people should watch it to see just how tough Jordan McCorry is.

“I could also have picked the fight with Eusebio Osejo back in 2017 for the same reasons. That felt like a really big night at the time. It was the start of a movement. It was the start of an era.

“If you’re bored at home, watch those fights. Both of the opponents really give good accounts of themselves and they are entertaining fights to watch.”
