Josephine Gordon: Hugo decided to geld him after that run, so let’s hope that brings out some improvement

Thursday 3rd August

4.10pm Goodwood

Central City

Once again, a wide draw in 17 makes things challenging and it is obviously a hugely competitive nursery. I have ridden him on three of his four starts, and he put in his worst performance yet when we tried him in first-time blinkers at Chelmsford. Hugo decided to geld him after that run, so let’s hope that brings out some improvement. Judging by his recent work it seems to have helped, though, and his pedigree suggests that the step up to 7f could well be beneficial, too. I would hope that he can be competitive off a mark of 78 as he showed definite ability on his first three starts, but this clearly looks a tough race. Soft ground would be an unknown but his half-sister won on it.

5.20pm Goodwood

Yorkshiredebut

This is the first time I have sat on her, so I don’t know a lot, to be honest. But she looks to have thrived when winning in first-time cheekpieces in a four-runner race at Catterick last time. That came over 5f on fast ground, and conditions won’t be as quick today and this is a lot more competitive – she has gone up 6lb for that win in a small field – but let’s hope she can progress again. She hasn’t raced on anything softer than good, so the less rain the better for her.
