Josephine Gordon: I would hope he can be competitive off a mark of 88

Mazyoun

I think 7f on fast ground could well be his ideal conditions.  He ran two of his better races on good to firm last season, and we gelded him after he struggled to win his maiden at Newcastle for me last October. Despite running fair races on all three starts this season, I don’t think he has had his perfect set-up, which he could well get for the first time here. We have tried him over 6f and 1m this season, and when he went over 7f at York last time the ground turned soft.  I would hope he can be competitive off a mark of 88, as that looks very fair on some of his good juvenile form.

Arabian Hope

This is obviously a massive step-up in class for her, as she only won her handicap off 84 at Chelmsford last time and is up against some Group 1 performers in here. But there is no doubt that is a lightly-raced and improving filly and I was impressed with her at Chelmsford. In fact, I got off and thought she could be a Listed filly. She picked up really well when I asked her, and the runner-up went into this race unbeaten. Some black type for this well-connected filly would obviously be great, and anything more a bonus, in what looks a very good Listed race.

He would have a chance on his good Chester third last month but he does need to bounce back from a modest run at Leicester last time and this is clearly a very competitive sprint handicap, as well. But maybe the quicker ground will suit, and he did run well on his first three starts this season.

Dark Intention

I haven’t ridden her before but she looked to have improved a bit from her reappearance run in her first-time hood at Chester last time and the handicapper has dropped her 1lb for it. If she comes back to some of her better form from last summer – and she has run well here before, too –  then she could surprise, stepping back in trip, though I imagine she will be a big price.

She is another one that I haven’t ridden before. She doesn’t look to have run to her best at Newcastle last time but she has been eased in the weights and had earlier run a good second over 5f at Thirsk, and has form over 6f. It’s a very open race, though.
