England joint favs for Euros after Norway demolition job

England joint favs for Euros after Norway demolition job

England might have started their Euro 22 campaign quietly. But on Monday night, the goals flowed for Sarina Wiegman’s side. Bet on the Euros now

The Lionesses beat Norway 8-0 in their second game of the group stage, scoring six goals in the first 45 minutes. In doing so, the side confirmed their place in the quarter-finals – and also, their realistic chances of winning this tournament.

England are first side to score 8 in a single Euros match

Following that staggering victory against the Scandinavian team, the oddsmakers now make the England side 13/4 joint favourites to win the Euros. France are also available at the same odds.

Georgia Stanway converted a penalty to open the scoring in the 12th minute for the hosts on a scarcely believable night at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.

The pen might have been soft but it opened the floodgates, Lauren Hemp scoring a second just three minutes later.

Ellen White would score a brace before half-time, with Beth Mead also scoring twice before the break – then completing her hat-trick in the 81st minute. The substitute Alessia Russo scored the other second half goal.

It was a far cry from the 1-0 win over Austria that got England’s tournament underway. That match had left some observers wondering uneasily if, like the men’s side before them, the women’s team would struggle to live up to expectations.

Those concerns were forgotten as England became the first team to score eight goals in a single game at the Euros.

England produced 25 shots

In truth, Norway looked to be in danger of conceding whenever England got forward. Will England find other sides so easy to slice through, as the tournament progresses?

Perhaps not, but it’s not like this result came out of nowhere; a few weeks back, England put five past the Netherlands – and scored 10 against North Macedonia earlier this year.

Norway are a better side than the scoreline suggests, with Ada Hegerberg the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League.

The 27-year-old ended a five-year absence from international football earlier this year; alas, she didn’t see a whole lot of the ball on Monday. Norway mustered just three shots all night to England’s 25. Of those, 15 were on target.

This England football side attacked with verve, composure and confidence – and there may be more to come. If Wiegman’s team can continue in this vein, it should be a summer to remember for the Lionesses.
