Chase The Spud

We obviously fancied him to run a big race in the Welsh National but things didn’t go to plan there. They moved the start back half a furlong and we all went too quick, trying to get a position racing into the bend. I revved him up far too much as a result and he just couldn’t finish off his race. So that below-par run was down to me. But the more I look at this race, the more I think that if were carrying 5lb less, then he would be the 3/1 favourite. It looks a very winnable Eider Chase. The problem is that he did go up 10lb for his Haydock win in November, form that worked out very well, and he does have to give weight away all round here. But we have freshened him up since Chepstow, his work and schooling has been A1, and everything is in place for a big run. His Midlands Grand National win shows the trip and ground aren’t a concern, it’s just a matter of the weight. He will need a career-best to win here, for sure.
